In 1955 John Palumbo was a 21 year old student at the Temple University. His first major was in Military Science and his secondary major was Dental Arts. The son of immigrant parents from Italy. John was a self motivated, determined young man with a solid work ethic. In his sophomore year at Temple he was looking for part time work and answered a newspaper ad from a local Goodyear Tire store in Philadelphia. He got that job at the 69th Street Goodyear Store, never handling a tire before in his life. He quickly climbed the ladder and within 1 year he was the Philadelphia Districts go to guy that corporate sent out to turn around the poorly performing Goodyear stores in the Philadelphia region. John was with "corporate" until 1971. It was in that year that he and his family took out a handshake loan and purchased a dilapidated former gas station in the median of a mostly barren highway cut through the middle of cornfields in a little crossroads town named Glasgow, DE. In December of 1972 and after major modernizing and renovation John Palumbo’s Car Care & Appliance Center opened its doors. And all his colleagues laughed.
Little did they know what John already knew. If you build it (and have the vision) they will come. See? John wasn't relying on the few homes and businesses in the immediate area. He was putting his money on the nearby towns and numerous new developments sprouting up a couple of miles away that had a need for a reputable, professional tire and auto center. He was also betting on the traffic that would soon be barreling down the now famous U.S Route 40. It didn't take long before everyone stopped laughing.
Fast forward forty some years and John is still doing back office work but also working the sales floor. His son Steve growing up in the business of course made that his career as well. You will find them both enjoying their customers while still getting the necessary work done. Don't be surprised if one of them offers to make you a fresh cup of coffee. Naturally the store has grown tremendously since the old days and Palumbo's Car Care Center Inc. is now THE state-of-the-art tire and auto service center in the area.
